Kevin Lindgren Prize 2018: 6pm 23 October 2018

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text p_margin_bottom=”20″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last” css=”.vc_custom_1540098170797{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The Copyright Society of Australia is pleased to offer the Kevin Lindgren Prize 2018 for the Best Student Presentation in the field of copyright. The competition is open to tertiary Institutions students in Australia. The prize will be presented at this event at Allens Sydney.

The keynote address, “The Era of Internet Accountability: The Implications for Copyright” will be presented by Hugh L. Stephens, Distinguished Fellow Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and Vice Chair Canadian Committee on Pacific Economic Cooperation (PECC).

Mr. Stephens has more than 35 years of High Level government and business experience in the Asia-Pacific region. He was Senior Vice President (Public Policy) for Asia-Pacific for Time Warner for almost a decade. Mr Stephens had previously spent 30 years in the Canadian Foreign Service with the Department of External Affairs, later the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). He also served abroad as Canadian Representative in Taiwan, along with a number of overseas postings in the Asia Pacific Region, including service at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing.

Eligibility

Entry is open to all enrolled students at any Tertiary Institution in Australia.

Entry Conditions

  1. A synopsis of 200 words outlining the subject of the student presentation in an area of copyright of the student’s choice must be submitted in digital form to kevinlindgrenprize@copyright.asn.au by 5pm AEST on 27 August 2018. Late entries will not be accepted. The synopsis of the student presentation must relate to copyright and demonstrate a respect for the subject matter.
  2. The synopsis must be the original, unpublished work of a single It may have been prepared for the purposes of course credit.
  3. The synopsis must be accompanied by a separate page, with the student’s name and contact details and a short biography. At the time of submitting the synopsis the student must also provide written confirmation of current Tertiary Institutions enrolment.
  4. Entrants should keep a copy of their submission as no copies will be returned.
  5. The criteria for judging is original thinking, well-reasoned arguments and overall presentation quality.
  6. The judges will select three finalists.
  7. The three selected finalists will be notified by email, post or telephone by 17 September 2018.
  8. Those three finalists will be invited to make a presentation on the subject outlined in their synopsis, to invited practitioners, academics and copyright industry members, at an event to be held at Allens on 17 October 2018 in Sydney.
  9. Each finalist will receive return economy flights from the finalist’s closest Australian metropolitan airport to Sydney, and hotel accommodation in a hotel on the night of the event. The cost of flights and accommodation shall not exceed $1,000 (if the finalist is a resident of greater metropolitan Sydney, travel but no accommodation expenses will be paid). Spending money, meals, additional costs such as travel insurance and any other ancillary costs are the responsibility of each finalist.
  10. If any of the finalists is unable to attend the event, the judging panel may select one or more additional entrants as finalists to take the place of the originally selected finalist who is unable to attend.
  11. There is no limit on the form the presentation takes, but the presentation must take no longer than 10 minutes.
  12. The judges will determine and notify the winner on the night of the event.
  13. The decision of the judging panel is final. Prizes are non-transferable, and the membership component of the prize cannot be redeemed for cash.
  14. The organiser reserves the right to amend or substitute any part of the prize at its discretion without notice to the entrants.

Neil Murray

Neil has practised at the New South Wales Bar since 2004. He specialises in intellectual property law and he has been recognised as one of Australia’s leading barristers in that field by Doyle’s, Best Lawyers, Chambers and World Trademark Review. He has appeared in some of Australia’s most well-known intellectual property cases, including Roadshow Films v iiNet, Universal Music v Sharman (the Kazaa case), Apple v Samsung, EMI v Larrikin (the Down Under/Kookaburra case), and Apotex v sanofi-aventis (patentability of methods of medical treatment). Justine Beaumont

Justine has practiced at the NSW bar since 2008, specialising in intellectual property. John Fairbairn

John Fairbairn is a partner in MinterEllison’s intellectual property team. He has acted in a number of matters relating to both lawful and (allegedly) unlawful exploitation of copyright in the digital environment. Examples include representing parties in the musical works rate setting proceeding (Apple’s iTunes); the KaZaa Federal Court litigation; the subscription TV sound recording rate setting proceeding; three of the first four site blocking cases in Australia. John has also acted for various ISPs (including Optus and TPG), Pandora Radio, the IAA, CopyCo and the NCU, which manages copyright licensing for schools.
